Natural Cold Remedies

When you feel like a cold is creeping on, do the following in any combination to start building your defenses. And stock up the items that you can't grab on a moments notice.

From the grocery store, think WHITE - the allium family made up of onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, scallions, etc. have been knick-named as Nature's Medicine Cabinet and are powerhouses for kicking colds. Toss them all into a brothy soup and especially load up on...

GARLIC - antibacterial and antiviral, you want to eat a lot of garlic when you're sick or getting sick. Raw is even better. Yeah, your breath will be kickin, but you'll feel better faster. And Edward Cullen will finally stop stalking you..... anyone?

GINGER - will relieve symptoms with its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to prevent a cold from getting worse. Slice into hot water with lemon for a tasty "tea" with the added benefit of Vitamin C

From your natural food store or or, purchase the following items to replace commercial cold "remedies". Instead of masking cold symptoms with products like DayQuil, go deeper and address the root of the issue. These items are the raw ingredients or concepts most of them are based off of, but in a very limited and processed way.

OREGANO OIL - more conveniently taken in capsule form, oregano oil is my secret for nipping a cold QUICK. Its antiviral, antibacterial, and anti fungal. It will kill whatever is in there before it gets any worse.

ELDERBERRY SYRUP- super high in vitamin C and antioxidants, it will help prevent a bug when taken preventatively, and it will soothe a cough and sore throat when its too late.

ZINC - has been long said to shorten the duration and severity of colds. While there are contradicting studies -as in most natural remedies- I still personally up my zinc when I get sick.

CURCUMIN - is the compound in turmeric that gives the root its anti-inflammatory property. When we're sick, a lot is inflamed; our throat, sinuses, and our heads. Taking a curcumin supplement will help relieve some pressure from the inside. Capsules are more concentrated, but you can also slice the actual turmeric root into hot water and add to your ginger tea tonic.
